Have you ever seen those little plastic fish-shaped soy sauce containers? They might look cute, but they are actually quite bad for the environment. These tiny packets are a symbol of our wasteful, single-use economy, and they are causing harm to our oceans and marine life.
With our recent partnership with ocean conservation group Take 3 For The Sea, we have designed a range of clothing to help raise awareness of the environmental impact of single-use plastic, specifically those fish-shaped soy sauce bottles!
Did you know that it can take up to 500 years for these plastic packets to break down? That’s a long time for something that’s only used for a few seconds. And to make matters worse, they are often not recycled due to their small size, which means they end up in landfills and the ocean. In fact, about 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the world’s oceans each year, and by 2050, the oceans could have more plastic than fish.
The little fish-shaped soy sauce containers are made of a recyclable plastic called polyethylene, but they are so small that they cause problems with recycling machines. To be properly recycled, they need to be put into a larger container made of the same plastic, which means they are often not recycled and end up in our oceans. And tragically, to birds and marine life, the packets look just like their normal food (fish!). Once ingested, the plastics cause the animals to slowly and painfully starve to death.
So, what can we do about it? By reducing our consumption of single-use plastics, reusing items whenever possible, and properly recycling what we can, we can help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans and harm our marine life. We can also play our part to encourage businesses to adopt and explore more sustainable alternatives!
We believe that fashion can be a force for good, and our clothing capsule with Take 3 For The Sea is just one way we’re working towards a more sustainable future. By wearing these designs, you can help us create awareness and spread the message about the harmful impact of plastic waste and encourage others to make more conscious choices. Let’s make a change together and take a stand for our oceans and marine life, let’s say No to Soy!
