Critical Slide X Greenroom Festival Japan 2022

Greenroom Japan was held last week. The first one with most covid restrictions lifted. That being said, mask wearing remained enforced across both the festival and general day to day throughout Japan. Didn’t stop around 100,000 surf, art and music loving Japanese descending on the harbour city of Yokohama for the 2 day long festival.

For those not familiar with Greenroom, the festival has been running for over 10 years and Critical Slide has been involved since day 1. The music line-up is generally made up of a select bunch of Japanese artists and a few International ring-ins. Previous years has seen the likes of The Growlers, The Babe Rainbow, The Drums etc, however it is the local acts that really get the crowd jamming.

The art side of things is a hand picked by Greenroom Gallery owner, Naoki. This year featured works from our pal Australian artist Nathan Johnson (Blacklist Studios)

Kota Toyoda

Hikaru Matsubara

Ryuji Kamiyama

The surf side is more so represented by the overall theme of the event and the brands involved. Most of the International surf representation was null and void this year, entry into Japan was pretty challenging. However didn’t stop our good pal, Jared Mell from getting involved. Few pics below from Japan retail stores, Pilgrim (Shibuya) and Ron Herman (Yokohama).

From a Critical Slide perspective, we setup shop at the entrance to the festival. Reconfiguring a shipping container into our UpCycle booth. We overdyed and recreated product out of leftover fabrics, leftover styles, rejected garments. Creating new and unique looking garments.

That’s a quick overview of Greenroom Festival. It’s a good time. A couple of the Critical team suffering Greenroom Meltdown.
