CRITICAL SLIDE ~ KAIUS POTTER
On a small farm behind Lennox Head.
How was it growing up in a small coastal community?
The older I get, the luckier I feel to have grown up there. I was more or less landlocked on my family's farm until I got my license, so I spent hours messing around with cameras and finding anything creative to entertain myself. Once I could drive, my whole world became centered around the surf. I was lucky my parents weren't strict because if the waves were good I'd just skip school. It was a fairly loose and alternative upbringing that nurtured creativity.
I've been based out of London the past year with my girlfriend Sasha. Between jobs we found ourselves traveling Europe whenever we could. We moved over knowing one person between us, then through her, became friends with a group of fun and creative people. It was one of those sink or swim situations where we were definitely out of our comfort zone.
I picked up a camera and started documenting all my friends who were surfers and skaters, so for me, it was the perfect medium to develop my craft. Through this, I was able to teach myself and experiment with a DIY attitude which has now taken me around the world, working on things that are different and exciting every time.
